World Book Day - Mystery Book Talk in Bluebirds
As part of World Book Day, Bluebirds took part in some mystery book sessions. Throughout the day, they were repeatedly presented with two books wrapped in paper, each with an illustration clue attached to the front.
The children were encouraged to look carefully at the images and talk about what they could see, what they already knew and, what they predicted the story may be about. Conversations were scaffolded to add detail, supporting evidence and spark imaginations.
Once discussed, the vote was on to see which book had captured their attention the most!
After some sessions, the story continued into play, as the children moved into the story-telling area to bring the book to life using our characters and resources. Play was enriched by adults modelling and using positional and descriptive language while setting up scenes, and by encouraging the children to use character voices and interactions as they re-enacted parts of the story together.
This activity supported the childrens' development of oracy, by encouraging children to articulate their ideas, listen to others and build on conversations. It also strengthened vocabulary, narrative skills and confidence in spoken language through meaningful, play-based contexts.
