Today in Science, we have used our investigative skills to compare and group together different types of rocks based on appearance and simple physical features. To begin with, we used our 5 senses to describe the different rocks that we would be investigating. We particularly enjoyed looking at the rocks underneath the magnifying glasses in order to get a much closer look! We also put a name to each rock and discussed where we may see them being used in everyday life (e.g. buildings, mountains, walls etc). After this, we learnt how natural rocks are formed and categorised them into 3 main types – sedentary, igneous and metamorphic. Then, it was time to investigate which type of rock each of ours were.
Our investigation included a water test, acid test and hardness test. Before setting off however, we had to think about how we would make it a fair test in order to get reliable results. Here we shared some great ideas such as, the volume of liquid we needed to use, the pressure of release from the pipettes, the direction of travel the rocks would be scratched and human difference/error if different people were involved in the investigation.
Finally, it was investigation time…
