This week in Maths, we have started our new topic of addition and subtraction. Before beginning our new learning, we have recapped what we learnt in this topic last year.
For year 3s, this consisted of us using the counting on / counting backwards method and the partitioning method in order to add and subtract numbers. In order to help us with this, we used various different practical equipment. This led to great discussions as to how we could use different versions of partitioning to work out our answers.
For year 4s, this consisted of us using the column method in order to add and subtract numbers. To practise this, we worked in pairs, with one of us taking on the role of the teacher, setting the questions and supporting our partner to work out the answer. This enabled us to delve deeper into our understanding of using the column method because we had to both use it ourselves to work out the answer and, we had teach others how to use it in order to solve Maths problems.
