This half term, KS1 have been learning about Islam in RE. To extend our learning, we were very fortunate today to have one of our parents come to talk to us about their religion.
She talked to us about the five pillars of Islam. These are Shahadah (declaration of faith), Salah (praying five times a day), Zakat (giving to charity), Sawm (Ramadan) and Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca).
We discussed how Muslims prepare to pray and how they pray five times a day using a prayer mat. Ms Hussain informed us that the prayer mat needs to be facing Makkah (Mecca) during prayer. Some of the children were eager to use the prayer mats and take up the correct position for prayer. Ms Hussain talked about the use of prayer beads and the covering of the head and body for modesty during prayer. The children had the opportunity to ask lots of questions.
We all learnt such a lot and thank Ms Hussain for coming to visit us!
