Woodpeckers Science Lesson

In our class, we have been looking at the digestive system. We labelled an image of our digestive system and discussed how it works. We discussed new vocabulary such as Oesophagus, Pancreas, and the small and large Intestines. There was another new word which the class found very funny – why don’t you ask them about this!?

As a class, we practically looked at the digestive system using orange juice, digestive biscuits, a banana, a plastic bag, a tea towel and a pair of tights. The whole class got involved by churning the food with the stomach acid (orange juice) and they squeezed the nutrients out of the small intestine (the orange juice in the tights) which left the waste product (the mushed up biscuits and the banana). Ask your children about this to see how much they can remember. Can they remember what happened to the waste product left in the intestine?
